Ex Curia in Latin means "Out of Court"

“We started this magazine as a way to provide the legal community at the University of Ottawa a way to express their talents outside of law and outside the academic rigidity of the profession.

For a lot of us, it’s the first time working with complex softwares and designs. Needless to say, as managing editors, we are supremely proud of the team for putting in the time and effort to bring to life this vision.

In witnessing the massive talent to bring a collective vision to life WHILST balancing the rigors of law school, we are absolutely confident that the future of law is in bright hands.

Specifically in the creative hands of students who are able to conquer steep learning curves and to be well-rounded beyond their academic pursuits.

We encourage you to revisit and reread our pieces – they may speak to you at a different time and place altogether.

Welcome to Ex Curia.”

– Nathan Ching, Taylor Stolfi, Debasmita Bhattacharya (2024-2025 inaugural managing team)

A word from the masthead

Right now, you might think you are just a piece of a puzzle:

A small gear in a law machine – continuously spinning and spinning.

Uncertainty and doubt might be boarding you up like a muzzle,

Forcing your desire of sharing your thoughts to start thinning.

Believe us, we know the feeling –

There is almost 300 of us just in 1L!

And alongside there is this suspicion, disheartening and unappealing,

That in order to stand out as a lawyer, you need to excel.

Thankfully, the facts of the case show that you matter to a higher degree.

In reality, we want to see not your grades or your awards, but your persona as a whole.

Not everything has to be about law – a reasonable person would agree;

Presenting your expressions, ideas, and opinions is our goal.

It might be hard to see your worth in the sea of perceived diamonds, being a gem.

But do not get lost in the wilderness of this unsure thought;

Focus on your interests, and maybe write an article for ExCuria on them!

As you only live once, and to live it fully and contentedly you ought.
